Nicotine and alcohol should also be avoided as they can make tinnitus worse.

Controlling tinnitus through good ear health is another way to keep the ringing in check. Have regular physicals, if you have an ear infection be certain to get it treated as soon as possible. Ear infections that grow worse can actually do lasting damage in the inner ear and if you have nerve damage, you can develop permanent tinnitus in the affected ear. A “white noise” machine or simply listening to a CD on a low volume of ambient noises helps many tinnitus sufferers sleep like babies. A fan blowing air is another good home remedy for getting a good night’s sleep.
